Turbulent shear stresses in hydraulic jumps, bores and decelerating surges

چکیده

In an open channel, a sudden rise in water level induces a positive surge, or bore, that may develop as a hydraulic jump in translation. When the surge propagates against an adverse slope, it decelerates until it becomes a stationary hydraulic jump. Both hydraulic jumps and decelerating surges induce some intense turbulent mixing and have some major impact on the sediment transport in natural systems. Herein, a physical investigation was conducted in a relatively large rectangular channel. Hydraulic jumps and surges were generated by the rapid closure of a gate at the channel downstream end. The turbulent shear stresses were measured with high temporal and spatial resolution (200 Hz sampling rate) in the jump fl ow. A comparison between the stationary hydraulic jump, hydraulic jump in translation and decelerating surge measurements showed some marked differences in terms of turbulent mixing. The results highlighted some intense mixing beneath the jump front and roller for all confi gurations. The levels of turbulent stresses were one to two orders of magnitude larger than a critical threshold for sediment motion. The fi ndings provide some insights into the hydraulic jump migration processes in mobile bed channels, and the complex transformation from a moving jump into a stationary jump. Coupling between free-surface fluctuations, velocity fluctuations and turbulent Reynolds stresses during the upstream propagation of positive surges, bores and compression waves

In open channel, canals and rivers, a rapid increase in flow depth will induce a positive surge, also called bore or compression wave. The positive surge is a translating hydraulic jump. Herein new experiments were conducted in a large-size rectangular channel to characterise the unsteady turbulent properties, including the coupling between free-surface and velocity fluctuations. Experiments we...

Unsteady Turbulence in a Shock: Physical and Numerical Modelling in Tidal Bores and Hydraulic Jumps

A turbulent flow is characterised by an unpredictable behaviour, a broad spectrum of length and time scales, and its strong mixing properties. Turbulent flows have a great mixing potential involving a wide range of vortical length scales. In steady flows, the turbulence measurements must be conducted at high frequency to resolve the small eddies and the viscous dissipation process. They must al...

Particle Image Velocity Measurements of Undular and Hydraulic Jumps

Measurements of the mean and turbulent flow fields in undular and hydraulic jumps have been acquired with single-camera particle image velocimetry PIV . Three Froude numbers, ranging from 1.4 to 3.0, were studied, and in each case data were collected at numerous streamwise locations. The data from these streamwise locations were subsequently compiled into spatially dense 80,000 grid points “mos...

In this paper, we describe the nonlinear outcome of spiral shocks in protoplan-etary disks. Spiral shocks, for most protoplanetary disk conditions, create a loss of vertical force balance in the post-shock region and result in rapid expansion of the gas perpendicular to the disk midplane. This expansion has characteristics similar to hydraulic jumps, which occur in incompressible fluids. We pre...

Are breaking waves, bores, surges and jumps the same flow?

The flow structure in the aerated region of the roller generated by breaking waves remains a great challenge to study, with large quantities of entrained air and turbulence interactions making it very difficult to investigate in details. A number of analogies were proposed between breaking waves in deep or shallow water, tidal bores and hydraulic jumps. Many numerical models used to simulate wa...
